Trumbull County Beekeeper Association Monthly meeting minutes

February 12th, 2012

Meeting held at the Trumbull County Agricultural Building. Called to order at 2:10pm by President Mike Shafer.

Treasurer’s Report: Bank account is set-up at Cortland Bank. Two people have to sign checks (President and Treasurer). The balance as of 12-6-11 is $746.78. Membership applications are available for $8 for individual and $10 for family. $25 check was given to the Sportsmen Federation for the TCBA membership into their club. We are making $10 for every $20 ticket sold to the gun raffle. For gun raffle tickets, record the stub number and turn $10 into Jo and give $10 and filled-out ticket stub to Darryl or Jan Vaughn.

Motion made to accept minutes by Rick Becker and seconded by Veronica Becker.

General

· Summer Sizzle is officially cancelled.

· Marsha talked about membership incentives ($5.00 off OSBA membership) to new members. OSBA is also offering varying degrees of beekeeping (journeymen, apprentice, master- beekeeper).

· Vermont beekeepers are having their conferences on Aug 13-17th.

· Don’t forget about mites. They are weakening the bee and causing your bees to be more susceptible to other diseases. Don’t forget to treat (powdered sugar, strips, other medicines/chemicals). Beekeeper’s are still losing 30-40% of their hives.

· For more tickets for the Gun Raffle contact Darryl or Jan Vaughn.

· Does the Smart-meter effect honey bees? Mike will look into this

· Some members checked their hives and brood is forming. Feed them with pollen patties if you have them.

· Webmaster wants to put a “Where to buy Local Honey” page on our site. Send info to Marsha if you want on it and she also wants new photos.

Old business

4H club is now posted on the website. Business Cards are still available, the agenda is set for 2012, we are still looking for people to write grants, packages can still be ordered, and we are working on a club brochure.

Bee Workshops: Wooster March 3rd, PA Feb 17/18th, WV Jan 28th

New Business

Bee Culture: on March 18th (1-5pm) is holding a conference and Mike is going. The cost is $60. Let him know if you want to go.

A letter has been written and will be sent to beekeeping catalog companies to get door prizes and catalogs.

There are little TCBA patches for sale for a $1.00 see Jo.

Rick will look into getting a new sign made for the fair.

Karl spoke about Top bar hives. He made his first one out of plywood, he has heard of people making them out of 55 gal drums, and you can buy a kit from catalogs. It was mentioned that many beekeepers using this style only take honey off in the spring.

Topic of the Day:

Rick talked on basic beekeeping Jargon. The PowerPoint will be on the website.

By-laws: Edited version will be sent to you by email. Please respond to Rick Becker by email of any changes.

Please check the website for the most up-to-date changes. (www.trumbullcountybeekeepers.org)

Everyone is reminded that next meeting is March 11th at 2pm at the Trumbull County Agricultural Building.

NEXT MEETING: THE COLONY: Names of hive components and parts. Show various tools and explain various methods used in handling colonies. Talk about steps that should be taken for spring management of your bees and place club order for your supplies you feel you will need for the year.
